AISLE Readers Choice Awards Information

AISLE announces winners on March 18

Students, now is your chance to decide the best books of 2022!

Every year, AISLE (Association of Illinois School Library Educators) hosts readers’ choice awards for K-12 students. A panel of librarians, teachers, & students determine the nominated titles; students then vote for their favorite book.

There are 4 different reader’s choice awards, each spanning different grades.

Monarch Award (grades K-3)

The Monarch symbolizes the growth, change and freedom that becoming a reader brings.

What are the books?

Where are the books?

  • You can find all AISLE award nominees on display by the DVD shelves. There’s audiobooks there too!
  • Many of the titles are also available on Hoopla or cloudLibrary as eBooks or eAudiobooks!

Who can vote?

  • K-3 students must have read or heard at least five of the titles in order to vote.
  • Students can cast only one vote (i.e. students should not vote at their school and their public library).

How do I vote?

  • Students can vote at the Library or online.
    • To vote at the Library, pick up a form at the AISLE Awards display (by the DVD shelves). Fill out the form and drop it in the box next to the blank forms.

How do I get prizes?

If you read and review at least 5 books, you’ll receive a Monarch Reading Certificate as well a personalized READ poster with YOUR face on it!

For your book review, give the book a rating of 1 to 5 stars and write at least 2 sentences.


Bluestem Award (grades 3-5)

Named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, the Bluestem Award is designed for students grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles.

  • Many of the titles are also available on Hoopla or cloudLibrary as eBooks or eAudiobooks!

Who can vote?

Caudill Award (grades 4-8)

The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois, for nearly 50 years. The award is given in recognition for her literary talent and the universal appeal of her books which have touched the hearts of many children and young adults.

Lincoln Award (grades 9-12)

The Lincoln Award is named after former President Abraham Lincoln, an avid reader and noted author.
